History
The company was started by a discount department store chain Zayre in 1984, on the border of Medford/Malden in Massachusetts. The name of the company comes from B forever J ean Weich, daughter of Mervyn Weich, president of the new company. Weich announced his resignation as president in June 1987, and left on 1 August. He was replaced by John Levy.
When Zayre Corporation sold the Zayre board to rival the Ames discount chain in October 1988, the TJX Company was formed. In 1989, TJX separated their warehouse division, which consists of HomeClub from BJ and now it is not working (later known as HomeBase, then House2Home), to form Waban, Inc. In August 1997, Waban separated BJ to become an independent company, BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc., headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts, while Waban changed its name to HomeBase, Inc.
In 2011, BJ was acquired by two private equity firms, Leonard Green & amp; Partners and CVC Capital Partners. In 2014, BJ is fully purchased by Leonard Green & amp; Partners.

Today
On January 5, 2018, BJ's operates 200 BJ clubs in 15 states and employs around 25,000 team members (both full and part-time). Clubs are found in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Delaware, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Ohio. Its main competitor is Costco Wholesale and concept version of Walmart warehouse club, Sam's Club.
BJ offers special benefits to its members. These include "member price", brand-name products at wholesale discount prices, acceptance of all valid ' vouchers, and receipt of various forms of payment (cash, checks, ATM/debit cards, all cards credit, and benefits of SNAP EBT).
Membership in BJ is required for these benefits and is available to individual and business consumers. BJ membership usually lasts twelve months from date of purchase and must be renewed annually. On January 2, 2018, membership of a standard Inner Circle (individual) is costing BJ $ 55 per year. In addition, BJ also has a special "Gift" membership that can be purchased for an additional $ 55, allowing 2% of most member purchases to be "valued" and redeemed for use against future BJ purchases (with the exception of alcohol, gas and tobacco ). Business members may apply to purchase BJ products for resale, and members of nonprofit organizations may apply for tax-exempt privileges (if any). Members with expired membership (if they choose not to update), as well as non-members are allowed to shop, but are assessed a 5-15% surcharge (depending on the club and circumstances) on their total, and are not allowed to pay by check. However, if a non-member keeps a receipt and decides to renew their membership or open a new membership, they will refund an additional fee and apply it to the membership fee, within seven days. To help with convenience, most BJ memberships can be updated in the register at the time of payment. Wholesale Club BJ has a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee for their membership; therefore membership may be refunded at any time during the membership period without the terms of 90 or 30 days.
Many BJ clubs offer special services to members, such as car rentals, gas stations, home heating oil, optical departments, propane charging, and holiday packages. These services vary from one location to another. In 2008, there were 154 clubs with optical departments. On January 30, 2010, BJ operated 104 gas stations at their club. In February 2007, BJ's closed all pharmacies at his club.
Wholesale Club Location BJ often provides different types of products in different locations. However, all clubs carry the items listed in the voucher books published every month. However, at certain times, it is not uncommon for certain clubs to not bring new goods immediately due to higher demand.
In March 2010, BJ announced that it would move its corporate headquarters from Natick to Westborough, Massachusetts in 2011. On January 5, 2011, BJ announced it would close five poorly performing stores in the Southeast, eliminating some 100 headquarters jobs at the end months, and restructured its headquarters and some field operations. The restructuring movement will result in savings of 78 to 82 cents per share for the fiscal fourth quarter.
