The United States was the first country to have Google Street View images and was the only country with images for more than a year after the introduction of the service on May 25, 2007. From the outset, most locations have limited number of views, usually limited to city limits and only including the main streets, and they only show buildings up to a certain height. Several suburbs or other nearby towns are included.
After the first few introductory sets, the collection of images from the cities added more detail, often including each side of the road, especially in areas closer to the city center. More suburban and other nearby cities are included.
The coverage of various cities in many cases, then enlarged and improved, but not necessarily on the same date with the addition of new cities. Improvements have included the addition of roads in the neighborhood where previously only closed main roads, expansions to more suburbs, and skyward views where previously only a view to a certain height was provided.
Initially when a group of cities were added, only their own towns and suburbs would be part of the picture collection. However the June 10, 2008 introduction also includes cities in a closed area with no camera icons and is isolated from other camera icons. Many more cities were added without icons on August 4, when the only US city that was added with the icon was New Orleans.
On November 9, 2009, parts of Hawaii were added, and coverage of the United States was also expanded, although some key areas have not been added. In addition to Hawaii, all fifty countries are now represented in Street View.
On July 2, 2013, high-definition images, at least 99% have been taken since early 2011, added to most of all fifty states, including those without HD images up to that point.
