HMS Rover is an 18 iron screw corvette made for the Royal Navy in the 1870s, its only class ship. The ship was originally assigned to North America and West Indies Station until he returned home in 1879. He was transferred to the Training Squadron when formed in 1885. Rover was not really fit for the role and he was placed in reserve four years later and then sold for scrap in 1893.

Design and construction
Rover was designed in 1872 by Edward Reed, Director of Navy Construction, as an improved version of the Volage class Correspondent. He displaced 3,462 tons of length (3,518 tons) tons, nearly 400 tons long (410 Â °) larger than the older vessels. The ship is 280 feet (85.3 m) long between perpendicular and has a beam of 43 feet 6 inches (13.3 m). The ship's forward has a draft of 17 feet 6 inches (5.3 m), but behind it it attracts 22Ã, 7 ft deep (6.9 m). The iron hull is covered by a 3-inch (76 mm) high oak layer that is coated with zinc from the water surface downward to prevent biofouling. Waterproof damp bulkheads divide the hull. Its crew consists of 315 officers and enlisted.
The vessel has one horizontal three-cylinder expansion steam engine made by Ravenhill, Easton & amp; Co., riding a 21-foot (6.4 m) propeller. Ten boiler cylinders provide steam to the engine at a working pressure of 70 psi (483 kPa; 5 kgf/cm 2 ). The engine generates a total of 4,964 horsepower (3,702 kW) which gives Rover a maximum speed of 14.5 knots (26.9 km/h, 16.7 mph). The vessel carries 420 tonnes (430 t) of coal, enough to steam 1,840 nautical miles (3,410 km, 2,120 mi) at 10 knots (19 km/h, 12 mph).
Rover is a rigged vessel and has an area of ​​17,863 square feet (1,660 m 2 ) sail. The ship was an indifferent sailor and his best speed sailed only 11 knots (20 km/h, 13 mph). Ballard believes that one of the causes of poor performance beneath the screen is due to the uneven drag on the front trim. The propellers can be lifted to the stern of the ship to reduce barriers while sailing.
The ship was initially armed with a mixture of 7-inch rifles and 64-poner 64 cwt rifled muzzle-loading. All sixteen 64-pounders are mounted on the sides while two 7 inch rifles (178 mm) are mounted under deck and dirt deck as a weapon pursuit. In 1880, the ship was re-armed with 14 BL 6-inch 80-pounder-loading weapons strike. One weapon each is mounted on the bow and stern as a pursuit weapon while the rest is a leaflet. Two carriages for the 14 inch (356 mm) torpedoes were also added.
Rover was laid in the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company yard in Leamouth, London in 1872. He was launched on August 12, 1874 and completed on 21 September 1875 for a total cost of Ã, £ 169,739. The hull is worth Ã, Â £ 104,718 and the engine is Ã, Â £ 65,021.

The ship was originally assigned to North America and the West Indies Station, and was slightly damaged by being stranded on one occasion. Rover returned home in 1879 to be repaired at Chatham Dockyard in 1879. He was placed in reserve after completion of repairs until he was assigned to Training Squadron in his formation in 1885. Rover less ideal for this role because of its poor performance under the screen alone and it paid off in 1889 and was sold for used goods in 1893. Among the people who have served on it are Antarctic explorers Robert Falcon Scott, who spent nine months in aboard the Rover began in late 1886.
