Description and history
The John Hart House stands on The Hill, a group of historic homes with very close proximity to the north by Deer Street and east by High Street at the north end of downtown Portsmouth. This grouping was made by road widening projects from houses originally located on or near Deer Street. The house is located on the western side of the cluster, just south of Daniel Pinkham's House and west of Phoebe Hart's House. It is a three-story wooden frame structure, with a hip roof, two interior chimneys, and a walled exterior board, and is oriented westward. The main facade is five wide bays, with a central entrance protected by the Greek Awakening porch with Corinthian columns. The windows are framed by Federal period stratified prints. The interior includes a Georgian staircase, with Georgian windows arched over the landing. Some of the surrounding fireplaces reflect the restoration of the Federal and Greeks Awakening.
When first built in the mid-18th century, this house is a two-story wooden frame structure. At the beginning of the 18th century, the third floor was added, and given extensive Federal-style treatment. These changes include replacing genuine Georgian windows with long windows with ears surround. In 1830, the Greek Awakening porch was added, and a Victorian fireplace was also added. The addition was originally placed in the back of the house, and in the 20th century it has been adapted for use as a nursing home. Moved to its current location as part of the rebuilding project, and is currently home to a commercial office.
