The symbol of the after-opening period or PAO symbol is a graphic symbol that identifies the useful life of the cosmetic product after the package is opened for the first time. It describes an open cosmetic pot and is used in conjunction with a number of months or years.
In the EU, cosmetic products with a minimum shelf life of 30 months are not required to bring the "best before the end..." date. Instead, there should be "indication of the time period after opening that the product can be used without harming the consumer". The EU Cosmetics Directive defines in Appendix VIIIa a neutral open-jar symbol, which should be used by the manufacturer to show this period.
The time period is most often represented compactly as several months, followed by the letter "M", as in "36M" for a period of thirty-six months, written either to the front side of the illustrated pot or to the right or bottom. The letter "M" is the initial word for the moon not only in English, but also in many other European languages. It is also used in ISO 8601 duration notation.
