A salivary gland fistula (plural fistula ) is a fistula (ie abnormal channel, epithelial channel) involving salivary glands or ducts.
Salivary gland fistulas are almost always associated with the parotid or ductal glands, although the submandibular glands are rarely derived.
Fistula can communicate with the mouth (usually does not cause symptoms), sinus paranasal (rhinorrhea) or facial skin (causing saliva to flow to the skin).
The usual cause is trauma, but salivary fistula may occur as a surgical complication, or if the channel becomes blocked by calculus.
Most parotid fistula heal itself within a few weeks.
