Controversy

In December 2008, when he received his award for Best Entertainment Personality at the British Comedy Awards, Carr dedicated it to Karen Matthews, who earlier this month was found guilty of kidnapping his daughter Shannon Matthews. Carr was quoted by BBC News as stating: "I have to dedicate this award to her [Karen] She will be the guest of my dreams I think she is a gay icon, people are a bit rude, are not they?"

Shahid Malik, MP for Matthews' constituent of Dewsbury, described Carr's comment about Shannon Matthews as "sick and insensitive". Carr later apologized for his comments, saying "I realize what I say is insensitive and I am very sorry for all the offenses caused." On his own site he added: "For those of you who have enjoyed my comedy and seen my actions over the past seven years you will all get used to my tongue in the cheek style and near the observations of the knuckles... Last night at the Comedy Awards [...] I became ironic, this is not my real clear sentiment. "
