The Polly Hill Arboretum covers 8 ha (20 acres) under cultivation, with an additional 16 ha (40 acres) of native forest land, located on Martha's Vineyard at 809 State Road, West Tisbury, Massachusetts, USA Union.. It has been developed since 1958 by Polly Hill horticulturist, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.
In 1687, Henry Luce, one of the first British settlers on Martha's Vineyard bought 400 hectares (1.6 kmò) of land in the center of the island from the natives. In 1926, 16 ha (40 acres) of this land, then a sheep farm, was acquired by the Hill family. After the death of his father, Hill decided to create an arboretum in 1958, growing a tree from seed. Through the purchase of adjacent land, the property was increased to a total of 24 ha (60 hectares). The Arboretum administration office is housed in a building dating from the 1670s. Other historic structures on the property include Far Barn (circa 1750) with attached slaughterhouse, Cow Barn (private residence), and adjacent "Gym".
The Arboretum now contains the Northern Taring Azaleas, witch-hazels, winter hazels, camellia, magnolias, stuartias, conifers, and deciduous and green hollies throughout the year, and incorporates dogwood avenues and impressive hornbeam edges. Polly Hill plant introductions include varieties of Cornus kousa, Ilex , Stewartia , and about forty Rhododendrons.
