History
Portmore began as a large area for schematic housing development in the late 1960s, when the West Indies Home Contractors (WIHCON) organization built thousands of prototype residential units in an effort to alleviate the overpopulation of Kingston; the first being Independence City. It has since grown into a suburb to Kingston; the large population goes to Kingston every day for work, school, and many other important services via the Portmore freeway.
Portmore was granted City status in 2003 and has its own municipal council and mayor, following a model of the local Jamaican government based in the UK. It now houses about 10% of the Kingston Corporate Area population.
Portmore currently has an acting mayor since the death of Mayor George Lee at the end of September 2013.
Portmore has affiliations with music artists Vybz Cartel, Mad Cobra, Baby Wayne, Masicka, Flossi lyphe, Spice, and many sound systems like "Flavor Unit" and "Areacode 876".
