Brown's Town is one of the main towns in St. Petersburg. Ann, Jamaica. In 1991, the population was 6,762. This city is a market and a center of roads in agricultural areas.

Geography

Brown's Town is located northwest of St. Ann in the Dry Harbor Mountains. The city is about 12.87 km (8 mi) from the island's north coast. The ugli fruit was first discovered in 1914 growing wild near the city.

One famous region is called Tobolski.

History

Dr. James Johnston who was born in Scotland in 1851 arrived in Jamaica in 1874. He started the Jamaican Evangelical Mission in 1876. Johnston created nine churches but the foundation of his medical mission and his religious council was in Brown's Town. Johnston became a political representative for St. Ann's Parish before he went to explore Africa. In the 1890s he brought an Afro-Caribbean Jamaican team to England where they were equipped to complete a 20-month journey of 4,500 miles through south central Africa. Their journey was photographed and described by a book published in 1893.

Brown's Town became significant as a market center in the mid-19th century after the abolition of slavery.

Education, health and recreation

Brown's Town is considered the education capital of St. Ann. Brown's Town Community College, located in the city, offers pre-tertiary and tertiary programs from the University of Technology, Jamaica and the University of the West Indies. There are three high schools in Brown's Town: Brown's Town High School, St. Bishop's College. Hilda for Girls, and York Palace High School.

At Brown's Town, there is a health center and general health services, as well as private medical services. St. Ann's Bay Regional Hospital and Alexandria Hospital also serve the city.

Popular sports at Brown's Town include football, cricket, netball, track and field, cycling, and lawn tennis.
