Uncovering tablets is a chewable tablet used to make visible dental plaque.
Tablets, sold freely in many countries, contain dyes (usually vegetable dyes, such as Phloxine B) that color the brightly colored plaques (usually red or blue). After brushing, one chews the tablet and rinsed. The color stains on the teeth indicate areas where plaque persists after brushing, providing feedback to improve the brushing technique. For self-examination, a dental mirror may be required. More sophisticated varieties contain multiple dyes, which selectively color plaque from different ages. With the most common varieties, plaque stains are not ripe red, dark purple, and blue pathological acidic plaque. This is because the blue dye washes the immature plaque, and the acid degrades the red dye.
