Histori
Hanson first settled in 1632 as a western parish in Pembroke. The city was officially established in 1820, and was named for the Maryland newspaper publisher of the Federal Republican newspaper and US Senator Alexander Contee Hanson. Hanson was a Freedom Speech and Press freedom speaker, and he was brutally beaten and his newspaper offices were attacked and crushed by angry mobs after he published an article criticizing the Administration shortly after the outbreak of the War of 1812. The city's early industry revolved around agriculture, and iron swamps and excavations. Mills also appeared along the river during the nineteenth century. Currently the town is mostly residential, with some farming and cranberry farming. Ocean Spray was first started by several swamps at Hanson, and remained based in Hanson before moving to Plymouth in the 1970s. Hanson is home to Cranberry Special Hospital which opened in 1919 as Plymouth County Hospital for Tuberculosis and closed in 1992.
