The University of Massachusetts is a public university system of five campuses and the only public research system at the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The University system includes five campuses (Amherst, Boston, Dartmouth, Lowell, and medical school in Worcester), and a satellite campus, with system administration in Boston and Shrewsbury. The system is accredited by the Association of Schools and Colleges of New England and throughout its campus enrolls 73,000 students.
The UMass system is ranked 52nd in the World in 2016 for its Innovative Achievements according to Reuters. The World University Rankings of Times College rank 91-100 systems in the world with a reputation in 2015 and 19 in the world in 2011. University of Ranges Ranking rankings of University of Massachusetts No. 65 nationally and No. 165 globally by 2017. By 2016, Times Higher Education places UMass 165 globally and 57 nationally. UMass Boston
UMass Boston is a research university located in the City of Boston. Located on the Columbia Point peninsula, the University is surrounded by Boston Harbor, the John F. Kennedy Library, and the Massachusetts State Archives. The Boston Globe is also headquartered adjacent to the campus, as well as Boston College High School. Furthermore, the university has many partnerships with its neighboring organizations, providing research opportunities and employment opportunities.
UMass Boston is known for its growing and diverse students of over 11,000 students and nearly 4,000 graduate students, making it the third largest campus in the system. UMass Dartmouth
Located in southeastern Massachusetts, UMass Dartmouth began in 1895 as the New Bedford Textile School, Bradford Durfee Textile School, and then Southeastern Massachusetts University (SMU). UMass Dartmouth offers a variety of programs in accounting, finance, management information systems, operations management and marketing, all of which are accredited by the Association for Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. UMass Lowell
UMass Lowell is a 1971 merger product between Lowell State College (founded in 1894 as Lowell Normal School) and Lowell Technological Institute (founded in 1895 as Lowell Textile School). UMass Lowell has a total of 18,316 students in the fall of 2017 and is the fastest growing of the five UMass campuses. The student-to-faculty ratio is 15: 1 and half of the undergraduate classes have fewer than 20 students. Ninety-three percent of full-time faculty members hold the highest degree in their field.

On August 8, 2013, The University of Massachusetts began asking for proposals for potential classrooms and offices to set up a satellite center in Springfield. UMass looks for a 25,000 square foot space that will be used for classrooms, faculty offices and other uses, with the option of doubling the amount of space later on. On November 23, 2013, Governor Deval Patrick and University of Massachusetts President Robert L. Caret announced the selection of Tower Field in downtown Springfield as a new satellite university center. The university will lease 27,321 square meters on the second floor of a 30-storey building, owned by Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. and located at 1500 Main St. UMass is planned to build an academic program at the center starting in autumn 2014.

Supervisory Board
The University of Massachusetts is governed by the Supervisory Board. The Supervisory Board functions as a legislative body primarily addressing policy issues. The board is not an administrative or management council. In certain rare instances when required by Massachusetts General Law, it may serve as an appeals body. The Council establishes a general policy governing the University, but has delegated much power to the President and, through the President, to the campus administrator for day-to-day operations.
Board Composition
The Founding Board has fourteen appointed members and four ex-officio members.
