Personal life

Kiyoko identifies as a gay woman. Kiyoko said that the video "Pebbles to Tempo" describes his experience by underestimating girls as they grow older. In a 2016 interview, he expressed his frustration about not connecting with others as he wished. When asked about something about him that no one knows and he is afraid to sing, Kiyoko wants to sing about the fact that he likes women, but struggles to come out about it. He wants to inspire trust in young people who deal with the same struggle. Through his music, Kiyoko works to normalize lesbian relationships in the society and the music industry he sees as highly heteronormative.

"If you see two girls falling in love and normalizing it, then [people] can go, 'I can fall in love, too, I can be that person.I can look that way.I can get a girl who it looks like that 'If they see that, then they can trust it, just how we are. "
