Onychomadesis is a periodic idiopathic spill on the nail starting at the proximal end, probably due to temporary capture of the nail matrix function. One of the causes in children is hand and mouth disease. It usually goes away without complications.

Onychomadesis can also occur if the nail is damaged or suffers from loss of blood supply, that is because of bruises. The nailbed turns black, and the fingernails fall shortly after. It takes about 6 to 12 months to grow back.
