Highbury College is a public education college in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. It provides vocational and academic education and training, from first-rate courses to university level, A Level, special services for business and education in the community.
This college is a member of the Collab Group of high-performing secondary educational institutions, and has achieved Quality AQ (Part-2) Accreditation (TQS) accreditation qualities with excellence in Building Service Engineering (Part B). Highbury currently occupies five centers. These are: Highbury Campus, Highbury City of Portsmouth Center and Highbury Northarbour Center.
The latest Ofsted examination was in May 2011 and rated as Class 1 Being in all areas.
The College actively promotes lifelong learning and provides adult courses in over 40 community venues in and around Portsmouth, as well as at Highbury College Centers. Highbury was assessed to make 'outstanding contributions to community cohesion' in its report Ofsted 2011. The College is also the premier provider of apprenticeship training in South East and currently offers internships in over 40 subject areas.
Colleges have undergone rebuilding of accommodation and facilities in recent years and recently completed a £ 56.4m development program throughout Portsmouth City, culminating in the opening of the new Highbury Campus by HRH The Princess Royal in October 2009.

The Origin of Highbury College
The history of Highbury College can be traced back to Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and the Arts, a privately-funded organization founded in 1870. The primary function of the School is to equip future City engineers and workers with the required skills. on the dock grown in Portsmouth and the Royal Navy Dockyard.
In 1894, the School's science and technology program was brought under the control of the local government as Borough at the Portsmouth Municipal Technical Institute. The Institute has three main departments: Chemistry, Mathematics & amp; Physics, and Civil & amp; Mechanical Engineering. More than 1,300 students attend evening courses with only a small number of students present during the day. With 1903 taught subjects including hygiene, biology, physiology, wood carving, navigation, marine astronomy and suturing.
In 1908, the Institute renamed Portsmouth Municipal College, In recent years, the College offers an external degree program recognized by the University of London. Municipal College continued to grow until, in the 1930s, a separate institution was formed for teacher training. Similarly, in the 1950s Art & amp; The design also becomes an independent unit.
The Municipal College was designated a regional College by the Department of Education and Science in the 1950s and renamed the Portsmouth College of Technology.
As a result of the rapid expansion of adult and technical education, the Local Education Authority (LEA) decided to establish a college branch at Cosham, which provides easy access for the Portsmouth people and its surroundings. The main objective of this is to enable Portsmouth College of Technology to concentrate on courses at the graduate and postgraduate levels, which have been conducted since initially as Portsmouth Polytechnic and more recently as the University of Portsmouth.
Official Highbury College Opening
Highbury College was officially opened on 17 September 1963 as Highbury Technical College. Built at a cost of £ 590,700, the College was originally designed for a population of 2,800 students, but 5,000 students enrolled in the first year.
Stacking quickly became a problem and College rented a cottage at Rugby Camp, Hilsea, to use as a temporary classroom. The lodges have an imperfect facility, and are immediately referred to as the 'Army Camp' by students and staff.
Full-time teaching staff of 78, plus part-time staff and guest lecturers are responsible for providing courses at Highbury. College starts with six Departments: Building & amp; Survey, Trade & amp; General Studies, Domestic Studies, Engineering, Mathematics & amp; Science and Hotel & amp; Catering.
The College concentrates on vocational and non-degree courses so it will not compete with Portsmouth College of Technology, which later became the University of Portsmouth. In the first year, Higher Education offers courses in crafts and technicians, and a higher level of technician, leading to the full technology certificate provided through City & amp; Guilds. In addition, students can study for Level O and A Levels, as well as the Ordinary National Certificates and Diplomas. The National Higher Certificate (HNC) in Building and Civil Engineering is offered part-time.
One of the innovative features of the new College is the language laboratory - the first of its kind on the South Coast of England, which includes soundproofed booths and audio and visual equipment. Language labs are introduced to the Common Market in mind and popular among local businesses who want to train their staff as a result of increased exports.
The new block for science teaching was officially opened on 9 February 1966 by Reginald Prentice, then the State Minister for the Department of Education. At the same time, the number of students is bloated by the opening of the Apprentice Training Center.
Tower
The large extension was completed in 1970, which included a 10-story Tower.
In 1970 the responsibility for the College Engineering College was transferred from the Department of Defense to the Local Education Authority, resulting in 700 other students for Highbury.
Along with the new accommodation, Highbury started a new decade with new modern teaching equipment, which included radiology laboratories and new digital computers. The pride of the venue, however, went to the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) studio, which included a broadcast news studio capable of sending programs to 40 classrooms throughout the College, many of which were made by College staff.
By 1971, Universities had grown to ten departments, with 324 full-time faculty members. Most significantly, Portsmouth Technical College's Hotel & amp; The Catering Department was taken over by Highbury when Technical College assumed polytechnic status.
Rapid growth Departments require the use of annexes around the City to H Block (pictured above), new facilities for Hotels & amp; The catering course, opened in 1981. H Block was the largest educational development project in Britain at the time and was officially opened on October 9, 1981 by Lord Romsey.
Creating a link
In 1974, Highbury welcomed its first visitors from the Frederick Vocational College Albert Lange, Duisburg in Germany. The relationship between the two universities has remained strong ever since, resulting in a number of beneficial activities including student and staff exchanges.
The number of students increased steadily over a decade and in 1976 enrollment reached 10,000 students.
In the late 1970s, the College was approved by the Council for Academic Awards to offer a degree program in conjunction with Portsmouth Polytechnic, the first of which was a degree in Hotel Studies and Catering. In recognition of this the College changed its name to Highbury College of Technology in 1978.
Unicorn Training Center
In 1982, the former Navy Ship Training Center was under civilian management and, as a Unicorn Training Center, initiated the transition to a multi-skill training center for apprentices, graduates and unemployed. Highbury took over the new facility in 1983, using it to teach students and internships in construction and electrical/electronic commerce.
Merge
On April 1, 2005, Highbury abandoned the control of the local Government and, under the Establishment, responsibility for College operations is now at Highbury College Corporation, with industry and trade-drawn members as well as academic and support staff, Presidential and Principal & Chief Executive.
In 2000, the completion of a £ 2.2 million improvement project resulted in new library facilities and the reorganization of College and Menara blocks. Development of the Library includes a study area and seminar room and was officially opened in 2001 by John Monks, then Secretary General of TUC. Expansion and renovation In 2002, the College completed a major renovation that included the five-storey Tower's top-floor conversion into a student accommodation and five floor teaching rooms updated below to include digital media suites and computer centers.
The same year saw the official opening of the Highbury Apex Center, which now serves 14 to 16-year-old schoolchildren, teaching them job skills such as brick, stucco and decorating.
Plans to expand the College's provision in the City Center are also implemented by renting a building adjacent to the College site located on Arundel Street. Named Highbury City Center (later the Highbury Arundel Center), this facility now includes Eden, a training salon for Hair & amp; Beauty student.
Highbury Northarbour Center
Highbury Northarbour Center opened in 2004. Approximately 2,000 students sign up for courses in the first year, and today Highbury Northarbour Center trains students in construction and built environment, with specialized workshops for each discipline and specialist construction library.
New start
In 2006 a newly introduced three-Kolese-in-one structure anticipates national developments in Government priorities. Collegiate, Corporate and Colleges Colleges arranges the provision of the College under three major umbrellas and are introduced so that the College can maintain a clear focus on the needs of its three major client groups: young people aged 14-19, employers and adult learners in the community.
The Highbury Town Center of Portsmouth (HCPC) opened in October 2007 after several years of careful planning. A central feature of the Center is that training can take place in a real working environment. Facilities at HCPC include an industry standard training kitchen and Chimes Fine Dining, an 80-seat training restaurant open to the public.
Walking in parallel with the development of HCPC is the redevelopment of the Highbury Campus. The state-of-the-art teaching and learning environment has replaced the old and outdated buildings on the Cosham site, many of which date back to the opening of the College in 1963.
Marine Training Program
Highbury College provides a range of vocational and academic programs in and around Portsmouth including Marine Apprenticeship, Vessel Construction Maintenance, and Maintenance of Cruise Ships. These courses are delivered at Solent Marine Academy, located at Boathouse4 in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
