Histori

On July 9, 1970, thirty dentists with other like-minded people met at the Berners hotel in London to discuss the establishment of a new dental organization soon to become Chairman of Jack Manning who was elected to form an establishment committee. The meeting has been the brainchild of a number of fans from the British Dental Trade Association led by John Davis and Peter de Trey. The establishment committee worked in close association with the British Dental Association (BDA) over the next ten months and then created the BDHF and the meeting was held at the Royal Society of Medicine on Friday 21 May 1971 with over sixty people attending.

Over the next eighteen months, a large number of activities were undertaken by members of the formation committee to form funding, formulate the Budget and Memorandum of Association and apply to Charity commissioners for registration as charity. The charity should be unique among dental bodies in membership that will be open to not only the profession, but also the supporters and members of the company from the dental trade.

On October 26, 1971, the first customer-first meeting was held at the Royal Society of Medicine. Jack Manning was elected as the first Chairman of the Board, John Davis honorary secretary and Martin Seymour as Treasurer. Mr. Douglas Lewis will be appointed as the first consultant director. The Association of Dental Health Conservation Ltd, trading as the British Dental Health Foundation (later to be the Mouth Health Foundation) was born. Its main purpose has been defined as 'To maintain the dental health of the community in all its aspects and in particular to educate the community in the benefits of achieving and maintaining the highest standards of dental health'.

At that time, the type of public activity, which would depend on funding from the dental trade as well as the profession and involving the entire dental team, was not considered by the BDA to conform to its role as dental professional association, trade union trade and negotiating bodies. Indeed, it was only about eighteen years later, after one or two previous violations that failed into the world of public relations that BDA established its press office with former Executive Director of Oral Health Foundation Lynn Stroud at the helm.

Initial years

The first Oral Health Foundation publication titled 'The Mouth Who Cares?' produced during the first year of operation and is the forerunner of dental health education materials to be produced in the coming years. The first product is a dental cleanser that sells for 25p.

Brian Rix, Fenella Fielding and Deborah Grant attended the launch of the official press of the Foundation at the Savoy Hotel in June 1971. The Mouth Health Foundation saw itself from an early date as the Public Relations Division of all other dental organizations.

In 1973 Elizabeth Elliott took over as administrative secretary, then became Executive Manager and eventually Executive Director played a role in which she would continue until 1982.

With major advances in media and broadcasting, 1974 saw Oral Health Foundation spokesmen appearing on Woman's Hour, Today and You and Yours, as well as many local radio appearances. This in turn leads to the beginning of the Foundation's consumer advice services with both phone calls and letters from the public being handled. The Preventive Dentistry Manual is produced this year and is distributed to all members and every dentist across the country.

The first two branches of the Foundation were established in the north and the Midlands in 1975 and the overall membership gradually increased. This year also saw the publication of Beechams-sponsored Oral Care Guidelines and distributed to 6,000 health visitors across the country. Oral Health Foundation staff answered more than 2,000 letters from the public.

The Design Center is where the Dental Health Exhibition was opened by Lord Mountbatten and was visited by 35,000 people for 5 weeks in 1976. The exhibition shows the best British dental technology as well as featuring preventive dentistry. The Scottish and Western branches were also established this year. Dana Raja is the host for the 10-week exhibition 'The Path to Dental Health'.

Information Gum Disease and Information Crowns is the first of a series of information that leaflets propose to dentists to give to their patients.

1978 saw the move of the Foundation from Cavendish Square to a larger place adjacent to the practice of Tom Harman-Smith at Finchley. The highlight of this year's event was the recruitment of 112 new members at the BDTA exhibition at Alexandra Palace, membership number reached 629.

1978 also saw the publication of the first Oral Health Foundation designation book, a publication that continues to this day. The North Western branch was also established this year while Collin Hall Dexter became Chairman of the Third Mouth Health Foundation.

The 1980s

Graham Barnby became the fourth Chair of the Oral Health Foundation in 1980 and 1981 to see further changes with Elizabeth Elliott's retirement as Executive Director and the appointment of John Stroud to be his successor.

1982 saw the transfer of the Foundation from London to new offices at Stony Stratford near Milton Keynes and Terry Morrison's election as the Fifth Chair of the Foundation. With two office accommodation changes, the Oral Health Foundation will remain in the Milton Keynes area for the next seven years.

The early 80s was a consolidation period for the Foundation which now has a membership of around 1100, a figure that does not vary much to this day.

The foundation became a family affair when Lynn Stroud took over from her husband John as Executive Director of the Oral Health Foundation in 1984. She also saw the launch of 'Operations Check' designed to encourage attendance at the dentist for free (later) examination.

The head of the northern branch of Gerry Dobbs, a general dentist, long-term member and faithful supporter of the Mouth Health Foundation became Chairman in 1984 and led a period of high profile PR activity. This includes the distribution of 'Smile Files' which contains information on many aspects of dental care for 1,000 journalists.

The thirty-second feature in phobic patients by London Weekend TV in 1985 resulted in the second largest number of calls to the LWT aid channel ever broadcast by such communities with thirteen lines in action over the weekend. PR activities this year produce dental hygiene materials that are viewed or read by about 18 million people.

John Tiernan became Chair of the Foundation at an important change in 1986. Sponsors of the BDTA and Dental Laboratories Association brought the Oral Health Foundation the first colorful dental health brochure 'Your Guide to a Better Smile' which continues to be today's bestsellers. Cooperation with the orthodontic community by the end of this year produces a second popular color brochure on orthodontic treatment.

Now CEO, Dr Nigel Carter OBE took over the seat in 1988, for a two-year assignment while Eric Ingham came as Chief Executive twenty-six years of tooth experience, the role he would hold for 10 years.

1989 saw over three hundred practice signing up for the ongoing 'Open House' campaign in Successful Week Smiles with great success. March 1989 also saw the Oral Health Foundation thrive in Milton Keynes and moved to its present location in an altered old school building in Rugby, Warwickshire.

The 1990s

1990 saw a landmark for the Oral Health Foundation with the first non-dental appointment as Chairman in the personal founder John Davis who has remained a faithful supporter of the Mouth Health Foundation throughout his twenty years of history. This year also sees new controversial contracts for NHS dentists and Oral Health Foundation commissioned by the Ministry of Health to produce leaflets detailing changes distributed to about four and a half million homes.

The Oral Health Foundation's recycling policy continues with a second three-year assignment by Colin Hall-Dexter who will lead the most significant change the Foundation has seen in its twenty years of history.

The first Oral Health Foundation dental award was held in 1991 and this event then became a regular and valuable feature of the tooth calendar.

Under the leadership of Stephen Selwyn, the Foundation undertook a broad research project to determine the sustainability of the decline of the dental support center and the national dental aid line. Unfortunately, the help center proved to be unfeasible but in 1997 the Word of Mouth 'dental aid line was launched and answered more than 6000 calls in its first year of operation.

That year also saw Chief Executive Eric Ingham step down and be replaced by the first female heads and cleaners, Sally Goss.

Accreditation

Many approaches have been made to the Oral Health Foundation for many years by companies wishing to accredit oral hygiene products. One of these included talks at AGM 1975 by Dr William Brown of Iowa on - 'Dental Products Support - Yes or No?'.

In 1991, time was considered appropriate to launch the Accreditation scheme but few could predict how it would change the financial health and future of Oral Health Foundation. In the first eight months of the scheme itself, there are 37 accredited products and steady growth in the following years has led to approximately 280 product shipments and 150 products on shelves with direct accreditation.

The result of this accreditation activity is financial security for the Oral Health Foundation that leads to the ability to create long-term plans for key activities to promote charitable causes.

Today, the Oral Health Foundation is responsible for the largest dental product accreditation scheme in the world, which includes 150 products in more than 50 countries. This is a "Claim based" scheme and approved products are given the Smiley face logo displayed on the packaging to help inform and advise the public.
